In this paper, we describe the development of a set of guiding principles for the evaluation of breeding techniques by the organic sector over time. The worldwide standards of organic agriculture (OA) do not allow genetic engineering (GE) or any products derived from genetic engineering. The standards in OA are an expression of the underlying principles of health, ecology, fairness and care. The derived norms are process and not product oriented. As breeding is considered part of the process in agriculture, GE is not a neutral tool for the organic sector. Evaluation of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for the competitiveness analysis of selected indigenous cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) Bradyrhizobium strains from Kenya Organic Eprints

Cowpea N2 fixation and yield can be enhanced by selecting competitive and efficient indigenous rhizobia. Strains from contrasting agro-ecologies of Kilifi and Mbeere (Kenya) were screened. Two pot experiments were established consisting of 13 Bradyrhizobium strains; experiment 1 (11 Mbeere + CBA + BK1 from Burkina Faso), experiment 2 (12 Kilifi + CBA). Symbiotic effectiveness was assessed (shoot biomass, SPAD index and N uptake). Currently Europe imports large amounts of unsustainably produced soy to meet the plant-based protein demand of the feed and food industry. The high protein content and low nutrient requirements of white lupins make them a sustainable local alternative. However, lupin cultivation is severely impaired by anthracnose disease, caused by the seed- and air-borne fungus Colletotrichum lupini. Low levels of seed infestation can already lead to complete yield loss. BackgroundWorldwide, India is the most important country for organic cotton production with 67% market share. In India, organic cotton production is challenged by 95% genetically modified (GM) cotton cultivation.Public breeding and seed multiplication were neglected and local non-GM seeds supply were eroded. With the continuous growth of the organic market it is important to maintain non-GM germplasm, to enlarge the offer of organic cultivars with a better performance that meet the demand of the market, and to rebuild the seed sovereignty of organic smallholder cotton farmers. Participatory breeding of Gossypiumhirsutumand traditionalG. arboreumcotton offers a great opportunity for developing locally adapted cultivars for increasing genetic diversity.
